When Eman Ahmed, 36, was wheeled into the press conference at Burjeel Hospital in Abu Dhabi, she was a far cry from the patient who left Mumbai’s Saifee hospital’s lobby amidst chaos. Laughing, speaking in full sentences and joking with her doctors, Eman’s psychological condition has shown massive improvement.

Dr Yassin Sahat, chief medical officer, Burjeel Hospital, Abu Dhabi, said, “When Eman was brought from Mumbai, she was going through severe depression. We have used a multi-disciplinary approach to treat her where obesity is just one of the issues.”

Her treating team said that the first few days after being brought to Abu Dhabi was the roughest for Eman who did not want to communicate with anyone, but now with the aid of psychiatrists she is doing much better.

While the hospital refused to discuss Eman’s weight there has been a tremendous improvement in her physical condition as well. Eman can move both her arms, she has regained some movement in one of her limbs and can now sit for extended periods of time. Her frequent seizures are also under control.

Her sister Shaimaa Selim, who moved Eman to Abu Dhabi after having a falling out with the treating doctors at Saifee hospital in Mumbai, said she was happy with the way things had panned out. “Eman is doing much better. My mother and daughter visited us for 10 days but they are now back in Egypt,” she said. With Eman’s treatment taking a toll on her, she joked, “After Eman gets better I might be the one on the stretcher.

Doctors at Burjeel Hospital said they were just taking forward the treatment plan carried out at Saifee but expect Eman’s recovery to take around one year.

“We do not want to discuss two things - her weight and the cost of medical care,” said Dr Shamsheer Vayalil, chairman and managing director, VPS Healthcare. “We want to give her a near normal life and respecting patient privacy will be our focus,” he added.
