Aspiring lawyers at GNLU Gandhinagar will have more to look forward to in the varsity's third convocation than just their academic achievements - a new element will be added to their list of laurels - the Goodness Award. The new award will be instituted to promote and boost good virtues among students from next year's convocation.

This and more were revealed at the second convocation of Gujarat National Law University (GNLU), Gandhinagar on Sunday which saw 160 law students belonging to the 2005-10 batch being conferred their degree certificates. Nineteen students (17 graduates and two post-graduates) from different departments of GNLU were proud recipients of gold medals at the function. Four of the 160 students were post-graduates and the rest graduates.

Hisashi Owada, president, International Court of Justice and justice Anil Dave, judge, Supreme Court of India were the chief guests for the occasion.

Internship and placement coordinator, K Swaminathan said, "Majority of the students have been placed, while the remaining students are awaiting the results of Public Sector Units (PSU) exams." Swaminathan further said that last year 50 companies had arrived for campus placements, while this year 35 firms have already selected the candidates.

More companies are expected to arrive for placement programme before April, he said, adding that compared to last year, students this time have got better packages. "They have received a 20% hike in salary package compared to last year," he added.

In his inaugural speech, Prof Bimal Patel, director, GNLU, said, "In this world of violence, terror and scams, we, as a part of the judicial system play a vital role fighting for justice.

Almost all the students, who passed out last year, have got placed in reputed firms, PSUs, government departments, banks and corporates." He also announced the addition of a new element from next year's convocation, the Goodness Award, which will be incorporated to encourage and enhance good virtues among students.
