Of what use is a research paper if there is no 'industrial use' for the same for society at large? Thinking on these lines, Gujarat Technological University (GTU) along with Global Institute of Intellectual Property (GIIP) has organised a two-day workshop on 'Patenting in Pharmaceuticals'.

According to GTU V-C, Dr Akshai Aggarwal, "This workshop is organised for two sections of people, professors and students, keeping in mind two aspects, what kind of topic to choose and what could be the possible industrial use of the same. I feel, when research has no practical application for the benefit of society at large, it tends to become void. We want our 1,800 students in the master's programme to think out of the box and not be bogged down by anybody around them."

Similar views were shared by principal of SJ Thakkar Pharmacy College, Rajkot, Dr Manish Rachchh, who said, "Research work in pharmacy has three 'I's, namely, innovation, inventive steps and industrial application. Once students and professors have an in-depth knowledge of these three, then applying for patents becomes a lot easier for then the patented formulae must be proved to be of use to various industries."

GTU is planning similar workshops this month end or in the first week of October for other disciplines as well such as engineering.

For this workshop GTU has received entries from 150 professors from 90 pharmacy colleges operating under the aegis of GTU.
