Think rich, think out of the box like these Gujarat students

Students from two colleges in Surendranagar and Morbi, recently lent a helping hand in designing solutions for civic bodies and industries and earned cash rewards, say officials of the Gujarat Technological University.

Students of colleges affiliated to the GTU are using their innovative skills to earn extra money. They have turned to innovation and are taking up challenges to design solutions for nagarpalikas and industries.

Recently students from CU Shah Polytechnic College received a cash award of Rs3,000 for helping design an improved system of storm water drainage line for particular areas to prevent polluted water from flowing on to the streets.

Recently an industrialist threw a challenge to a few students to come up with energy efficient falcon pumps and a specific solution and in turn earn Rs25 lakh, along with an opportunity to work in his company.

"A few students are working on various projects in Nagarpalikas and in industries. We found out that specific areas in Surendranagar had problems of drainage lines for which we were asked to design solutions. Thus, we designed a storm water drainage line. For this, we combined theoretical knowledge with some innovative techniques," said Nikita Lad, one of the students. She added that she will utilize the reward money in expanding other, similar projects.

KH Bhatt, principal of the college, said taking up challenges not only helps students to put into practice their theoretical knowledge but also boosts their confidence as they get cash rewards for their innovations.

"It compels students to learn and explore beyond the textbook knowledge and also devise new techniques," the principal said.
PC Vasani, principal of the LE College, Morbi, said students are working towards their research by using internet and books. "Once they are done with this phase, they will start their work on the pump designs as per the requirement by the company. They are keen to earn the huge sum offered to them," he said.
