The political murmur in Gandhinagar has become a hot issue on the Thakor Sena leader and Congress MLA from Radhanpur Alpesh Thakor joining BJP soon.

In fact, it is being speculated that Thakor, along with some six to seven MLAs from North Gujarat, could join the ruling party in the state.

Talks like he may replace senior BJP leader and cabinet minister Dilip Thakor in Vijay Rupani’s government have been the rounds.

Alpesh, however, has rubbished all the claims.

Such rumours have been doing rounds in political corridors of Gujarat since quite a long time and the same got a logical support when Alpesh Thakor did not appear during Congress’ agitation and assembly siege programme in last week.

His lacking of interest kind of participation in assembly debate also hinted towards his softened approach for ruling party BJP.

Moreover the incidents of Thakor and his father’s intervention in Ahmedabad district Panchayat and Congress losing the power on the local body after that gave a push to talks that Thakor had been supporting BJP from the back doors.

A senior Congress leader, on condition of anonymity, said “Alpesh always had been sceptical. He was reprimanded by Rahul Gandhi many a time for his anti-party activities. He has some nexus with the BJP leaders too for some monetary interests. But, the Thakor community is with him because of Congress only. Once he crosses the line, he will vanish himself.”

No comment from BJP’s front could be received on the issue as Alpesh replacing BJP stalwart Dilip Thakor who is also from Thakor belt in Patan district, also picked up the heat.

Dilip Thakor’s daughter-in-law had called a press conference a few days back and had charged the minister, his son and other family members of domestic violence on the issue of the giving birth to the girl child.

It is also noticeable that Alpesh had become a bone of contention for Thakor leaders in Congress because of his increasing proximity with Congress president Rahul Gandhi. His claim for a ticket from Congress for Lok Sabha elections from Patan seat also has been becoming stronger, which other senior Congress leaders dislike, said a Congress MLA supporting Alpesh Thakor.

Alpesh Thakor made it clear that he would not join BJP in any case.

Trashing such updates, he said, “It is all about the rumours and nothing beyond that. I have been made a soft target because I am believed to be a strong leader in north Gujarat.”
