Waste is not a waste until it is wasted. Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is selling all the plastic that it has confiscated so far to a private player for recycling. Around 6 tonnes of seized plastic will be recycled into irrigation pipes and tarpaulins.

"We have six tonnes of confiscated plastic material. The material is in form of bags, pouches and raw material below 50 microns which is not allowed for use in city limits," said Dr. Bhavin Solanki, in-charge medical officer of health. "We are going to sell it to a private firm which will recycle it. We are getting as much as 10 rupees per kilogram of plastic waste from the firm, which means that we will earn around Rs 60,000 from the existing stock," Dr Solanki said.

Nepra Environmental Solutions Private Limited, which is recycling AMC's dry waste on a daily basis, has purchased the plastic from civic body to recycle it. "Every day we are recycling 50 tonnes of plastic waste which we collect from different commercial units. The waste comes in all forms. We have 30 small vehicles and five Eicher trucks which are used in collecting dry waste from different locations," said Sandeep Patel, CEO Nepra.

"Our aim is to reduce non-biodegradable waste by recycling it. Plastic which has been seized by the corporation is of no use to them. We buy the material, and then shred it in parts. The smaller parts are then melted and moulded into pellets and lumps," Patel said.

The plant has the capacity to recycle 50 metric tonnes of waste and has machines that automatically churn out plastic and paper waste.

"To start with, our workers manually remove sharp object from waste. They also remove metals. Then the segregated waste is put on a belt which removes small parts and dust," said Dhrumin Patel, director of Nepra.

As of now, the seized stock with Nepra is being segregated according to the colour and thickness of bags. "We are segregating the bags as per colour and thickness. There are different types of bags and material in the waste recovered by the AMC which needs to be segregated before we can recycle them. We will shred the material in the presence of AMC officials, and later we will make lumps out of those. The lumps will then be converted into irrigation pipes and tarpaulins," director said.
