Former Gujarat minister Maya Kodnani, whose conviction in the Naroda Patiya massacre case of 2002 was overturned by the Gujarat High Court on Friday, said she was innocent, and had been proven so by the court.

"I am happy with the high court judgment. The truth has prevailed. I am thankful to God for giving me and my family the strength to fight this battle," a frail-looking Kodnani said while speaking with reporters at her residence on Saturday afternoon.

In response to a question about returning to politics, the three-term former MLA from Naroda constituency said the high court judgment had come only 24 hours ago, and she had not yet given a thought to it.

"We will see what the future has in store for me," she said.

The gynaecologist-turned-politician claimed that the BJP had stood by her, and supported her over the years, and she would continue to serve the country through her party.

In fact, deputy chief minister Nitin Patel said on Friday itself that Kodnani could "rejoin politics".

The 62-year-old declined to comment on Opposition Congress's charge that her acquittal was a 'mockery of justice'

In August 2012, Kodnani was convicted in the Naroda Patiya riots case, and sentenced to 28 years' imprisonment. The special SIT court had indicted her as the 'kingpin' of the riots. She was granted bail on health grounds in July 2014, and was out of jail since. Her conviction was overturned by the high court owing to lack of evidence against her.

However, Kodnani's legal troubles are not completely over, as she is facing trial in the Naroda Gam riots case.
