The 11-year-old girl who was raped and murdered, and whose body was found near Jiaav-Budhiya road in Pandesara in Surat on April 6, belonged to Rajasthan and was allegedly “bought”, along with her mother, as a bonded labourer. Police said the man who had bought them first killed the mother, probably around March 20, before murdering the girl.

More gruesome details emerged after Ahmedabad city crime branch officers detained two persons —  Hari Gurjar and Ram Naresh — from Surat on Thursday night and subsequently arrested the main accused Harshsai Gurjar from Rajasthan on Friday. Hari and Harshsai are brothers.

The girl was held captive in Harshsai’s house in Surat for almost 7-8 days, police said, adding that he beat her with belt and stubbed cigarettes on her. During interrogation, Harshsai revealed he had bought the girl and her mother from Gangapur in Rajasthan. The Gurjar brothers are residents of Pandesara and Harshsai had been working as a construction contractor in Surat.

The mother used to work at his construction site. When she stopped coming to work, from March 20, co-workers asked Harshsai about her whereabouts.

He said she has gone missing and that he was taking care of the girl. The mother’s body was found on April 9, around 200 metres away from the spot where the girl’s body was found.

In a CCTV footage from around the crime scene, investigators noted Ram’s car. Crime branch officers said that during the interrogation, Hari and Ram revealed, “Around six months ago, after the widowed mother of the girl agreed to be sold as a bonded labourer, Harshsai bought both of them for Rs 35,000 and brought them to Surat. Harshsai sexually exploited both the mother and the daughter. He later murdered the girl by strangulating her and dumped her body with the help of Hari and Ram, whose car was used for the same,” Rajdeep Zala, additional deputy commissioner of police (Crime branch) said, adding Harshsai had then fled to Rajasthan with his family.

The police have sent her DNA sample to FSL, Surat, and are awaiting the report, said Zala.
