Back-bencher in greater disrepute

Corporator Katta Jagadish Naidu, arrested by the Lokayukta police on Thursday afternoon as he attempted to bribe a witness in the KIADB land scam, was in Lokayukta custody till past midnight.

A large media contingent waited outside the office of the Lokayukta for the corporator to emerge, but there was no sign of him.  Jagadish had been arrested around 3.30 pm at Gandhinagar, and taken to the Lokayukta office.

Lokayukta officials said that several legal formalities had to be attended to. Investigators were also attempting to ascertain the whereabouts of a certain Kumar, who was entrusted with handing over the bribe amount of Rs1 lakh to the witness, Ramanjanappa, a complainant and main witness in the KIADB scam case.

As they waited, media persons recalled that after the election results to the BBMP were declared in April this year, many believed that Vasanth Nagar corporator, Katta Jagadish, son of the state minister for information technology and biotechnology and Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board, Katta Subramanya Naidu, would be the city’s mayor. However, the young corporator said with great modesty at that time that being a first-time corporator, he had much to learn. He said he would sit on the last bench of the council.

He was often seen with a few other first-time corporators in the last row of the council hall. During council meetings, the gang of ‘back-benchers’ were often seen poking fun at speakers and at each other, cracking jokes and chuckling. Senior BJP leaders would threaten to disperse the group.

Jagadish, born on August 7, 1979, is now a cause of much embarrassment to his party.

Declared assets
According to an affidavit, Jagadish declared a monthly income of Rs2 lakh. He claimed that he had no inherited immovable property.
