The BBMP is literally drumbeating its way around town! Its campaign against property tax evaders continued on Wednesday, and many defaulters were put to shame and they agreed to pay the amount within a few days.

The thamate (drumbeating) programme was carried in front of Jaiko Automobile Engineering Company at Doddenakundi Industrial Area in Mahadevapura zone. The owner had evaded paying Rs37.3 lakh as tax. The BBMP had issued notices but the owner ignored them. On Wednesday, the BBMP revenue officer organised a drum-beating programme. The owner has now requested three days’ time to pay the tax.

Similarly, another property owner on Malleswaram 2nd Main Road was shamed into paying Rs8 lakh property tax and Rs1 lakh fine for 2005-06.  The BBMP also targeted another defaulter on Malleswaram 8th Main Road. He had failed to pay Rs12 lakh.

BBMP commissioner Siddaiah said despite giving enough time to defaulters, they had evaded tax. Hereon, if defaulters failed to pay tax, the BBMP would issue confiscation warrants against them.
