Although the motive of this programme was to improve awareness about Disability Discrimination Act, 1995, the way it was conducted highlighted that the organisers themselves were not considerate towards the needs of the physically challenged.

More than 300 differently abled persons were made to wait for more than three hours at the state-level disabled rights awareness programme, held at Jain Bhavan on Sunday.

Moreover, the organisers put the physically challenged attendees to the trouble of climbing the stairs; ramps were not arranged for them. Although the programme was scheduled to start at 10am, it began only at 12.30pm. Till then, all the attendees, including physically challenged children, kept waiting.

Taking note of the proceedings, KV Rajanna, commissioner, department of welfare of disabled, said focus and punctuality were required for everything. He said if anything is done without these two elements, the project was bound to fail. He pointed out that the Sunday’s function lacked focus.

He said authorities in Maharashtra have done good work to empower the physically challenged persons. He said differently abled persons are treated equally in Maharashtra and are paid under the Sixth Pay Commission. He compared it with the salary of physically challenged teachers in Karnataka— Rs4,000 a month.

Rajanna spoke about the ignorance regarding Disability Discrimination Act. He said many people, including even ministers, do not know that the department of welfare for disabled comes under the women and child development department. He said many think this is an individual body.

More than 50 NGOs took part in the programme. Sridhar, president of Karnataka Committee for the Protection of Disabled, Vijay Kumari, Kittur Rani Chennamma awardee, and doctor Nagendra Kumar were among those present.
