Bangaloreans manage waste from their own kitchens

Dirty streets lined with garbage and waste piling up everywhere is inspiring Bangaloreans to do their bit. Instead of complaining about the BBMP’s attitude and waiting for it clean up the city, they are taking to managing waste from their own kitchens.

“Composting with our products reduces 3,000 kg of waste daily,” says Poonam Kasturi, the famous Compostwali, of Daily Dump. This weekend, Daily Dump is organising a two-day workshop for children below 12 years.

Compared to other cities, Bangalore is doing very well. There is curiosity about how one can do the right thing, even among children.

“Children are vital for better understanding of basic environment-related issues and are significant in impacting decisions of people around them. The sessions are tactile, using hands-on activities to understand the process of composting, reducing waste and keeping homes and schools clean,” she says.
Over the two days, the ‘totally hands-on and safe’ workshop will show participants how junk from your dustbin goes on to become useful compost, and how these small bugs help in a big way”. 
This is Daily Dump’s first such workshop. The idea is to change the attitude of children to bugs.

“We dislike bugs. The moment we see them, we want to kill them. Through the workshop, we want to tell children that there are lots of good bugs that are useful. They are not all yucky. Mosquitoes need to be killed, spiders don’t. Bacteria that make curd, those that break down garbage, maggots are all good.

There will be storytelling and activity-based sessions. These will be interactive and provoke the children to think.
In the last five years, Daily Dump has sold 3,500 units in the city and helped set up 17 clones — businesses similar to Daily Dump  around the country.

It now plans to help citizens recycle more waste by supporting the local kabaadiwala.

“Managing waste should be everyone’s business.  There will be more workshops for corporates and their families, too.
