The Bengaluru International Airport (BIA) has turned into a fortress following a security alert sounded by central intelligence agencies over a possible terror attack to blow up major Indian airports, especially in Bangalore and Hyderabad.

Two battalions each of Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP) and City Armed Reserve (CAR) have been deployed to keep a tight vigil on the roads leading to BIA. This is in addition to the existing contingent of the Central Industrial Security Force personnel already guarding the airport. A mobile dog squad has also been pressed into service, a senior police officer said.

“All vehicles approaching and leaving BIA will be checked near the Trumpet Junction where the road from BIA meets Bellary Road (NH4). The airport surroundings will be under a round-the-clock surveillance with teams patrolling this arterial road. This exercise is done following the terror alert sent by the central agencies warning the city police of a possible terror strike at the airport,” he said.

Deputy commissioner of police (North East) Basavaraj Y Malgatti said the tight security has already been put in place on late Tuesday afternoon. “The CISF is making rounds at the BIA while the KSRP and CAR personnel will look after the entry and exit points to BIA,” he said.

Police commissioner Shankar M Bidari said 200-strong specially trained police personnel from the Chennapatna police training school, who have completed their basic training in combat mode, have been inducted into the KSRP in Bangalore.

“They are at our disposal when any emergency arises. However, there is no specific threat as per the central agencies. There is also an additional 200-strong commando force stationed in city,” he added. The threat to BIA was sounded based on information collected during interrogation of a terror suspect arrested from Uttar Pradesh, Salman alias Chhotu, on March 5.

“What he (Salman) has revealed cannot be taken as completely true, but we cannot take it lightly either,” a security official said.
