Jagadish Shettar to write to Irish govt for justice in Savita case

Chief minister Jagadish Shettar has taken personal interest in getting justice for Savita Halappanavar, the dentist from Belgaum who died in Ireland because of harsh abortion laws.

Shettar has decided to write a letter to the Irish government, seeking justice for the family of Savita and for bringing suitable changes in the abortion laws of Ireland.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Shettar said, “Humanity is above all law, and one needs to take cognisance of it. Such a thing should not have happened with Savita. The state government will write a letter to the Irish authorities.”The chief minister assured that the government would extend help to the victim’s family. “A government representative will visit the bereaving family, assuring all the necessary help,” said the CM.

In a condolence letter addressed to Savita’s father, the chief minister said, “I have learnt from the media reports about the incidents leading to her death. I am pained to know that a precious life was lost because proper medical care was refused. I have also learnt from media reports that the doctor refused to take proper steps citing religious reasons. It is my belief that with required medical attention her life could have been saved.”
In the letter, the CM stated that the state government has raised the issue with Union government, urging it to take up the matter with the Irish government through diplomatic channels.
