When it comes to donating organs, women are at the forefront. This was the message delivered at a press conference on Wednesday organised by Narayana Hrudayalaya on the eve of World Kidney Day.

Saved by granny
A few such women were brought to the limelight at the press conference. Take the case of Rajamma, 60. Her 20-year old granddaughter, Navya, was diagnosed with renal failure about a year ago and was advised kidney transplant. Rajamma immediately volunteered to donate a kidney. There was no hesitation or apprehension from her side and she wanted the transplantation done as soon as possible.

After she was declared fit to donate a kidney, the transplantation took place on December 21, 2011, at Narayana Hrudayalaya. Navya, a final year student of BBM, is doing well and preparing for her exams these days.

Cousin comes to aid
Likewise, when Prabhavathy, 31, a newly married teacher, was advised kidney transplant following allergy to medication for chronic knee pain, her cousin Kalavathy, 41, volunteered to donate. Prabhavathy’s husband Bhaskar said his wife and her cousin grew up together and so it was easy for Kalavathy to offer her kidney. He said Kalavathy’s family, too, supported her decision. Prabhavathy underwent transplantation on April 14, 2010, at Narayana Hrudayalaya and is doing well. She and her husband are planning to start a family.

Mother helps out
For Manju, a happy-go-lucky bodybuilder in his early twenties, dietary supplements proved to be his undoing. Initially, he was put on dialysis and then advised a renal transplant. Even as he started searching for a donor, his mother Saraswatiamma, 44, offered her kidney. After their physiological profiles were matched, the transplant was carried out on August 26, 2010, at Narayana Hrudayalaya. Today, Manju is happily married and leads a normal life.
