Rajkumar Hirani’s Sanju, the biopic of Bollywood superstar Sanjay Dutt starring Ranbir Kapoor, Paresh Rawal, Manisha Koirala and Vicky Kaushal, has had a dream run at the box office. The film that began with a BANG continued to gather steam through the first two weeks and until the third Saturday (July 14), it managed to collect as much as Rs 300.55 crore (India nett).

A trade source says, “It had a clear run for two weeks. However, this Friday, it was joined by Soorma, the biopic on hockey player Sandeep Singh. So, there has been a slight dip in the box-office collections. But the way things stand, Sanju looks likely to go strong for at least another week.”

Though the box-office figures of yesterday (Sunday) were yet to come in, one is assuming that because of the big sport attractions last evening (Wimbledon men’s finals and 2018 FIFA World Cup Final), the take would definitely have dipped. However, there is no reason to panic. Sanju’s collections are expected to pick up again from today and go on for a while longer.

While everyone connected to the trade is hedging their bets on where the final tally of this biopic will stand, a couple of experts opine that it may go on to become Hirani’s biggest hit since the lifetime collections of Sanju are expected to cross that of his 2014 blockbuster PK.

However, Sanju is unlikely to match up to the final tally of Bollywood’s highest grosser, Dangal, because it didn’t have the holiday advantage that the latter had. The Aamir Khan-starrer released on December 23, 2016, and went on to collect almost continuously till January 26, 2017, when Kaabil and Raees broke its run. Sanju collected Rs 200 crore in the first week, whereas Dangal collected Rs 192 crore. However, in the second week, the Ranbir Kapoor-starrer lost its advantage. It collected only Rs 89.75 crore in its second-week run whereas Dangal had collected Rs 108 crore in the second week, using the clear advantage of the Christmas-New Year vacations across the globe.

While this film marks Ranbir’s entry into the Rs 300-crore club where he will keep company with Salman and Aamir, we don’t know who he will upstage at this point.
