On the 11th death anniversary of Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, filmmaker Meghna Gulzar announced the film based on him starring Vicky Kaushal in the leading role.
About a year back, it was reported that Meghna Gulzar will be directing a movie based on the life of Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw. Instead of that film, Meghna took up Chhapaak starring Deepika Padukone in the leading role. Well, now the film on Sam Bahadur is back in the pipeline and it will star Vicky Kaushal in the titular role. With this film, Meghna and Vicky will be reuniting after Raazi. Today, on his 11th death anniversary the official announcement was made.
Meghna and Vicky shared the first look of the actor from the film and it will leave you awestruck instantly. Kaushal nailed the perfect look as Manekshaw and has made fans pretty excited for the project. Meghna tweeted the look stating, "A Soldier’s Soldier. A Gentleman’s Gentleman. In remembrance, on the death anniversary of Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw. It is my honour to tell the story of one of India's greatest war heroes, with @vickykaushal09 essaying the historic man! @RonnieScrewvala @RSVPMovies"

Talking about casting Vicky in the leading role, Meghna told Mumbai Mirror, "We wanted to finish the edit on the draft first before reaching out to an actor. One day, I just called up Vicky, who happened to be nearby and invited him over for a cold coffee. We had a conversation about Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw. He was about to fly to the US and said that he doesn’t want to read the script and would just do the film. But I insisted that he read it and call me."
On being quizzed about shooting plans, the filmmaker replied, "We will start shooting in 2021, which is good for all of us because it needs that much prep time as we have the Partition, accession of Kashmir, and the 1971 Indo-Pak war to cover in the narrative."
