Producer-director Aanand L Rai's fantasy thriller Tumbbad is set to open Venice Film Festival’s Critics’ Week this year.
According to a Variety report, the section’s artistic director, Giona Nazzaro describes Tumbbad as 'a fast-paced parable about greed' and 'a visionary fantasy film, rich in visual inventions, special effects and blood.'
Co-directed by Rahi Anil Barve and Adesh Prasad, Tumbbad is a fantasy thriller set in 19th-century colonial India. Rai had shared the spooky motion poster of the movie earlier this month.

In a press statement about the movie, Aanand had said, "Very excited to release Tumbbad this year. Other than great storytelling, Tumbbad is an audio-visual experience on the big screen. Personally, I feel it’s a genre-defining film for our audience."
"Making Tumbbad has been a six-year long roller-coaster of a ride. Aanand ji has only brought more energy and enthusiasm in me. You feel at home when you are with him because he speaks from his heart. He and his team has given Tumbbad love and care just like a family,” lead actor Sohum Shah had added.

Tunisian director Abdelhamid Bouchnak’s horror film Dachra is the closing movie for out-of-competition section. Nazzaro described the movie that 'tackles the conflict between tradition and modernity through the hope for a revolution that is not yet accomplished.'
These Critics' week entries will compete with official selection movies for the Lion of the Future prize, worth $100,000.
The 75th Venice Film Festival will begin on August 29 and will end on September. The festival will announce official selection lineup on Wednesday.
