The Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC) is coming up with a special complex to house local technology companies. It has already allocated 16 hectares of land near Bhat village on the outskirts of Ahmedabad, where about 10 lakh square feet of space will be made available in about 18 months. Industry sources say this location would be ideal owing to its proximity to both the city as well as Ahmedabad airport. Companies believe the new venue will provide a distinct identity to the information technology sector in Gujarat.

MK Das, principal secretary in Industries and Mines Department said: "We have already allotted the land, where the tower will come up. Until now, about 100 local IT companies have guaranteed that they will buy space there."

Local IT players said that a proper ecosystem is lacking as the companies are scattered across Ahmedabad; the upcoming complex should address these issues. "The proposed tower will be iconic, with beautiful ambience and house only IT companies. It will also make intermingling of companies and the work force possible," said Vivek Ogra, chairman of GESIA IT Association, the body that represents IT, ITeS and electronics companies of Gujarat.

The GESIA has managed to rope in around 100 local companies to buy space at the property which would be able to accommodate close to 10,000 people. "These will be local companies. We have signed Expression of Interest (EoI) with them. Also, these companies will be setting up here as part of their expansion plans and operations at existing locations will continue," added Ogra.

He further emphasized on the importance of the location – it would facilitate the work force's commute as it would be close to the city and at the same time, it'd make travel easier for industry experts owing to its proximity to the airport. This location would be much more conducive than Infocity in Gandhinagar, which, Ogra said, has its own set of problems.

The GESIA, aided by the National Association of Software Services Companies (NASSCOM), is also organising a mega IT Expo in September at Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar, in order to put Gujarat in a larger orbit in the technology sector. The move aims to replicate Gujarat's achievements in the automobile sector in the emerging areas of ICT.
