In a first, Adani plans wind mills to complement coal-fired power in Mundra

Adani Group's Mundra site will turn into one of world's few existing combo power generating farm with the project to set up a 150 megawatt (mw) wind power park on the sea shore close to its existing thermal power project.

Using state-of-the-art forecasting technology for wind generation, the wind park during high wind period can replace thermal generation of up to 200 mw thermal generation effectively for limited period of time, DNA Money has learnt.

The plan is to set up 74 wind mills along the shore and the project would be taken up by the government on Monday in a meeting meant for projects within coastal regulation zones, documents submitted by Adani Green Energy for clearance of the project says.

"This would be one of the world's first 'combo' generation power plants, combining wind with thermal generation and would be a trail-blazer to a new business model of power generation: wind power combined with super critical technology to benefit the environment like never before," the report on the wind power project says.

The project involves setting up 74 sea shore based wind mills within Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone at Kutch.

"It is proposed to make Mundra more environmental friendly and install a 150 mw approximately wind park in the vicinity of the port and the thermal power station. This will make Mundra the first green port in the World," the project details said.

Adani currently has a capacity to produce about 4,620 mw of coal-fired power run by Adani Power (Mundra) Ltd.

Adani has been finding it difficult to run the plant based alone on imported coal and has recently discontinued supplying 1,250 mw to Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam for this reason.

In such a scenario, commissioning of the 150 mw plant would relieve Adani of some of the cost pressures at Mundra.

In April 2016, Adani announced its foray in wind power production placing order for 70 mw of cacacity of which 50 mw would be set up in Anantapur in Andhra Pradesh and the balance 20 mw at Lahori in Madhya Pradesh.

The Adani group seems to be on an investment overdrive.

They have recently applied to the Odisha government for land to build an airport to cater to its fledging Dhamra port as reported by DNA Money recently.
