India will be looking to put on an extraordinary performance against West Indies in the first ODI after winning the closely-fought T20I series 2-1.
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma end 2019 as the joint-highest run-scorers (2633 runs) in the history of T20Is. As for ODIs, Kohli has been consistently finishing as the leading run-scorer (in a calendar year) for the past 2 years.
The Indian skipper had topped the run-charts in 2017 with 1460 runs and ended up scoring 1202 runs the next year. As for 2019, Kohli may complete a hat-trick unless the 'Hitman' decides to come in his way.
Currently, Kohli and Rohit are the top two in the list of ODI run-scorers list in 2019. The captain has scored 56 more runs than his teammate, who scored 1232 runs from 25 matches this year.
Top-5 run-getters in ODIs in 2019:
Virat Kohli: 23 matches, 1288 runs, average 64.40
Rohit Sharma: 25 matches, 1232 runs, average 53.56
Aaron Finch: 23 matches, 1141 runs, average 51.86
Shai Hope: 25 matches, 1123 runs, average 56.15
Babar Azam: 20 matches, 1092 runs, average 60.66
If Kohli manages to finish 2019 as the highest run-scorer in ODIs, it will be a record 4th time that he has done so in a calendar year.
No other player in ODI history has managed to score most runs in a year, more than 3 times. No other player has also managed to repeat the feat in 3 successive years.
The 3-match ODI series will be a platform for the two batsmen to upstage each other and take the top spot.
Batsmen who were the highest ODI run-getter in a calendar year most times:
Virat Kohli - 2011, 2017, 2018
Desmond Haynes - 1984, 1985, 1989
Sourav Ganguly - 1997, 1999, 2000
Kumar Sangakkara - 2006, 2012, 2014
Kohli has 2366 runs to his name across all international formats in 2019 and is also the leading run-scorer in the world in the current year. Rohit Sharma (2184) and Pakistan's young gun Babar Azam (1820) round up the top-3 run-getters in 2019.
If Kohli continues to excel with the bat, he could end the year on a high provided Rohit does not interrupt his captain's progress.
