MS Dhoni is the one of most clear headed individuals in the cricketing world. The former Indian captain also a very strong-willed person. It seems no one can force MS Dhoni to do something he doesn’t want to do- not even the mighty International Cricket Council (ICC).

An interesting anecdote in the recently released book The Dhoni Touch by journalist and writer Bharat Sundaresan tells the story of how Dhoni snubbed ICC during 2016 World T20.

ICC and the broadcasters had come up with an idea where captains had to read out their playing XIs into the microphone after the toss. Dhoni was supposed to be the first captain to do it. However, when the request was made to him, he simply answered, ‘No, I don’t think so’. That was the end of the story. ICC had to drop the grand idea.

The book tells how it is very hard to change Dhoni's mind and how he never allows anyone to mess with his thoughts.

In the book, former selector VB Chandrasekhar recalls one such incident. According to Chandrasekhar, in 2008 he once asked the then new Indian captain that they needed to have a small chat after the game. However, Dhoni simply said said, ‘Where do I have the time?’

According to Chandrasekhar, that was Dhoni's way of saying, ‘Let’s not discuss things. Leave it. I am okay with doing what I am doing.’

The former selector also said that there was no way to force an idea on Dhoni. If anyone tried that Dhoni would just ignore both the person and the idea. Chandrasekhar said that the secret to make Dhoni consider an idea is to leave it open-ended. Then he may consider it.

He recalls how he used this trick to make Dhoni listen to his idea during CSK's third season in the Indian Premier League.

Sri Lanka’s Muralitharan who was a part of the CSK squad was struggling slightly with the ball and Chandrasekhar decided to drop a suggestion. Dhoni was getting Ashwin to bowl four overs straight up and Murali would come in after the strategic break. Chandrasekhar’s view was that Ashwin could be stopped after three overs and Murali given his first over before the strategic break. Since the batsmen wouldn’t generally risk losing a wicket before the break and this may allow Murali to settle into his spell better.

‘I said that and left it at that. Come the next game, believe it or not, he did just that. Now I couldn’t go and tell him “thanks for listening”. He would have definitely stopped doing it in the next match,’ the book quotes Chandrasekhar as saying.
