The monsoon showers on Monday gave Delhi people respite from the heat, but it also led to huge traffic jams in most part of the city. Stuck in this traffic was a CATS ambulance taking a pregnant woman to a hospital for her delivery. When minutes later the jam did not get clear and the ambulance was unable to move, the woman delivered a baby in the vehicle.

"I was so thankful that the baby and her mother were well and there was no problem during the birth," said Ravi Shankar, Paramedic staff in the ambulance, who helped with the delivery.

Narrating the incident, Kishan Singh, the ambulance driver, said that he and Shankar were on their way to the hospital when the woman started to have labor pain. They had to take a decision and the baby was born when the ambulance was parked on a road between Karawal Nagar and Shastri Park area.

The ambulance, equipped with medical kits, was stuck in the massive traffic jam when the pregnant woman's started to scream due to the pain. Once the baby was delivered, Kishan said that he cut the cord, put the oxygen mask on the baby, suctioned the baby and asked the woman to swallow a tablet after giving birth. "The baby was alive and crying," he said.

The boy and the mother are both healthy and under observation for the next 48 hours at the hospital. The family, especially mother Sushma, are happy and have been thanking the ambulance staff. This is their fourth child.

"It takes only 30 minutes from West Karawal Nagar to Aruna Asaf Ali Government Hospital but due to the traffic, it took more than 70 minutes. We had suggested to the family to go to the nearby jag Parvesh Hospital, but they wanted to go to AAAGH. I am glad that all went well," said Singh.
