L-G tells cops: Upgrade use of technology

Lt Governor Anil Baijal on Friday reviewed the Delhi police's vision document for the next 10 years and directed them to develop institutional linkages with eminent educational institutions and upgrade technology for systematic capacity-building.

During a meeting with Delhi police personnel, the L-G was provided with an overview regarding possible trends over the last ten years. Senior police officers told the L-G that the changing trends included population growth, the total number of IPC crimes registered, the trend in economic offences and online fraud cases, issues of mobility, connectivity, cloud computing and social media among others.

The L-G was also briefed about the possible future scenario visualised by the Delhi Police based on discussions with academia like IIT, IIIT-D and the Delhi University. "The scenario envisages the development of smart cities, globalisation, rapid urbanisation, Internet of Things (IoT), artificial Intelligence, wearable devices, new mass transportation models including driverless cars, and artificial intelligence among others," the LG's office said in a statement.

Outlining its future strategic priorities, the Delhi police informed the changes that would be required in the broad aspects of policing included investigation, intelligence, prevention of crime, traffic management, law and order, human resources and logistics, and the various ways to integrate them.

The L-G also directed the police to upgrade their use of technology in a bid to better understand the changing requirements of today's society.

"The Lt Governor also reminded the Delhi Police that their main objective is to prevent and detect crime while pursuing justice for all. He asked them to come up with definite actionable time-bound plans focusing on immediate requirements keeping in view their technological and personnel capabilities," the statement added.
