A mentally challenged woman beheaded and mutilated her eight-month-old son in Prem Nagar in the wee hours of Friday, before turning on herself, slashing her own wrist and throat.

Sarika’s husband Hari Shankar found her and Chirag lying in a pool of blood when he returned home. “I reached home post 12 am as I had put up a garment stall in the weekly market,” said Shankar.

“I knocked on the door and when no one answered, I forced it open and saw my Chirag’s head on the floor and the rest of the body cut open on my wife’s chest on the bed. She was unconscious.

He has not gone to his house since then. “Sarika has been admitted to Sanjay Gandhi hospital,” said a police officer. The couple has two daughters, who live with their grandmother.

Four years ago, when Sarika and Shankar, lost their one-and-a-half-month-old son mysteriously, nobody paid much attention to his death. Now, after the murder of 8-month-old Chirag, the family members say that they feel Sarika could have strangled him to death.
