A group of residents protesting against the construction of the landfill in Sector 123 met Akhilesh Yadav, the Samajwadi Party chief and the former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh in Delhi on Wednesday, as they feel let down by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and his government, who had said that any landfill site should be at least 2 km from any from an area of habitation, but Noida Authority is seen not to be relenting on the matter.

According to the residents, despite orders from Yogi to ministers and officials of the Noida Authority to look into the landfill issue in Sector 123, the meeting between officials and the residents on Tuesday remained inconclusive as the Noida Authority only tried to convince them that it is not a dump yard but a sanitary landfill (SLF) site.

"Akhilesh Yadav extended his support to us and asked us to move court and take legal action. We are waiting for the court to end its summer vacation on July 2, so that we can file a petition with the National Green Tribunal (NGT) against Noida Authority's decision to the construction of the landfill," said Anupam Oberoi, a resident of Sector 122.

While hundreds of protesters gathered at the Parthala roundabout in Noida and removed their shirts as a mark of protest against the Noida Authority for its move to set up the waste-to-energy plant at Sector 123 on National Green Tribunal (NGT) orders. Women protestors, too, joined in and sat down in the middle of the road, throwing traffic out of gear at the chowk.

On June 19, a meeting was held between Noida Authority and the protesters in front of union minister and local MP Dr Mahesh Sharma and MLA Pankaj Singh, but it yielded no result.

When the National Green Tribunal (NGT) issued an interim order on May 29 directing the authorities to stop the dumping of waste in the forest located at Sector 54, the authorities decided to build a landfill site in Sector 123.

This decision has caused a huge furore and the residents from sectors 117-122 along with some villagers started protesting against the Noida Authority against the construction of the landfill and the waste-to-energy site. However, the Noida Authority has already started dumping the waste there.

As per the Master Plan 2031 of Noida, a recreational green area is proposed at the site where the authority is constructing a dump yard and the residents thus state that they will not let the authorities violate the rules.

According to the district magistrate, BN Singh, the law and order is their primary concern. He stated that if the residents have an issue, they should move to either the NGT or the court, but should not intervene in the work of a statutory body. Yet the document shown by the residents states clearly that they can complain to the authority if they feel that the site is not suitable.
