5 reasons why the Indian remake of 'Game of Thrones' is a terrible idea!

Seven kingdoms. One throne. Blood, incest, war and glory; Game of Thrones is a thrilling series created by George RR Martin. Lannisters, Starks, Mother of Dragons, The Wall, and the ruthless White Walkers - all of it was captivating and enthralling to say the least.

I have been an avid follower of the series and books and have been looking forward to the upcoming fifth season. Something however, has ticked me off. Rumours are abuzz that a Hindi remake of the Game of Thrones series will soon be seen on Sony Entertainment Television. So allow me to state 10 reasons why I think this remake will be an epic fail:

The quirks of Indian soaps!

Do you remember the last time someone said something shocking on TV and the camera didn’t repeat the moment thrice with dramatic music? Me neither. Now the GOT series is primarily filled with twists that are often too shocking. However the way our Indian television soaps function, the exaggerated drama would definitely be a mood killer.

The disastrous casting

I can partly make my peace with Sakshi Tanwar playing Daenerys Targaryen, the Mother of Dragons. The actress may not meet the physical requirements of the character but her ability to pull off the role can’t be targeted. I however do not hold the same opinion regarding Anita Hassanandani playing Cersei Lannister in the show! The actress is seen as the loud and clueless vamp Shagun in the Star Plus show Yeh Hai Mohabbatein. Cersei’s character is cold and calculating, and I have my doubts about Anita being able to pull it off with finesse. Coming to Kaisi Yeh Yaariyan’s Parth Samthaan playing the role of Jon Snow, all I can say is, he truly ‘will know nothing’ on how to play his part.

Bold content: Are we there yet?

Be it the nudity, sex scenes, violence or incest, the GOT series is graphic in every sense. With a hue and cry about Sakshi Tanwar kissing Ram Kapoor in Bade Acche Lagte Hain,  I’m certain the makers will be dishing out a show minus these visuals and that is essentially what would make it a Mahabharat of sorts. Thrones, war, bloodshed. Ring a bell? 

The big ban theory

Let’s assume that the Indian makers do choose to go graphic for a change. In a country where banning stuff seems to be our solution to everything, I’m sure the series will witness a similar fate. GOT is essentially a hit amongst the youth, and isn’t a ‘family’ show. While youngsters often rave about how ‘awesome’ the show is, I’m certain the same wouldn’t receive a popular vote by those who swear by more traditional family sagas.  

Missing the point

If they finally do go ahead and put forth a series which has characters borrowed from GOT but not the entire plot, let’s not call it a ‘remake’ of the show shall we?
