Ever since his debut in Bollywood with Abhi Abhi (Jism 2), Arko Pravo Mukherjee has wowed the audiences with his romantic compositions — whether it was Tere Sang Yaara (Rustom), Nazm Nazm (Bareilly Ki Barfi) or most recently, Naino Ne Baandhi (Gold). His upcoming song in Satyameva Jayate is in the same space, too. “Tere Jaisa is a Sufi love song about submission in love,” says the music director. The composer and singer is excited about creating different kinds of tracks. One of them being Mujhe Haq Hai for the UN, an anthem on woman empowerment rendered by Neeti Mohan. He also has a song on food and one on misunderstanding in love for Prakash Raj’s comedy Tadka starring Nana Patekar, as well as singles that are a departure from typical love ballads.

COMFORTABLE WITH ROMANCE

Arko says that he has been penning romantic lyrics since he was 14. “Love is a subject that I am more comfortable with — whether it’s happy, introspective or about a moment in a relationship. I’m also passionate about poetry and lyrics. So, I prefer composing as well as writing my own tracks,” he says. He adds, “My non-film single with Shirley Setia is a love song but more haunting. One of my other private songs is about me as a traveller. But romance comes naturally to me,” he smiles.

SINGING MORE

Arko entered the industry as a composer in 2012 with Jism 2, but he started singing only in 2015 with Kapoor & Sons, after which he has crooned a number of times. What brought about the change? “I never saw myself going from studio to studio singing other people’s songs. When it’s my own composition, it’s with me from the inception and it’s all about getting the emotion right. For Saathi Rey (K&S) and Dariya (Baar Baar Dekho), Karan Johar said that my songs sound best in my own voice, so we should stick to that. When Nazm Nazm became a hit, everyone started liking my vocals,” he chuckles. Singing also needs technical finesse, and since he hasn’t had training in vocals, Arko was unsure about pursuing it earlier. The artiste wishes he had sung Maula (Jism 2) – originally rendered by Ali Azmat. “I’ll do my version soon, maybe as a part of a project where I will sing my compositions (with new videos) that I haven’t sung. “There’s a trend of remakes these days and before someone else revisits my songs, I may as well do it myself,” he signs off.
