Bollywood gets brazen!

On screen, Bollywood’s getting bolder by the day. Incidentally, it’s no different off-screen either. Whether it’s discussing their love life or expressing their views, actors today are not afraid to speak their mind.

Considering an industry that has a history of ‘politically correct’ actors, the outspoken ones found themselves tagged wild or rebels. However, today, the actors are not afraid to take a dig at anyone — co-stars or filmmakers, friends or foes, whether on national TV or on Twitter.
And no more is it wise to assume that it’s only the wannabes who’ve been bitten by this outspoken bug so their rabble-rousing statements get them the attention that their work couldn’t.

Most recently, actor Imran Khan wasn’t afraid to speak his mind when he chose Raju Hirani over Karan Johar as a filmmaker he’d want to work with on a chat show. Another show guest, actor Deepika Padukone is said to have made open digs about her ex-boyfriend Ranbir Kapoor. Actor Sonam Kapoor too was not afraid to take on Shobhaa De when the latter took to film-bashing on Twitter.

An old-timer filmmaker who doesn’t wish to be named agrees. “In the old days too, we had stars making nasty comments about each other, but it was done in hushed circles. But nowadays it doesn’t take time for the younger stars to lash out at each other.”

Adman Prahlad Kakkar feels that it has to do with public access.

“With Twitter and Facebook, the celebrities have been brought down from the pedestals of being demi-Gods to reveal their human side. Their audience too is less judgemental about their private lives. So, it’s easier for stars to erase the gap between public image and what they really are,” he says.

However, Imran Khan atrributes it to a comfort level. “We know that some things are said in jest; it’s never directed to hurt anyone.” Filmmaker and show host Karan Johar seconds it saying, “The best part about today’s actors is that they are comfortable with what they do. That is what I like best about today’s generation, about ourselves.” Well, B-Town’s Gen-Next  sure can teach a thing or two to our old-timers for a change!
