Fans angry after China censors 'Titanic' nude scene in 3D

The 3D version of Titanic, which broke box office records in China this week, has left some fans of Jack and Rose fuming because the one thing they wanted to see was the nude scene.

The most successful love story filmed took in an estimated $11.6 million on its first day.

“Considering the vivid 3D effects, we fear that viewers may reach out their hands for a touch and thus interrupt other people’s viewing,” News.com.au quoted China’s State Administration of Radio, Film and Television as saying.

“To avoid potential conflicts between viewers and out of consideration of building a harmonious ethical social environment, we’ve decided to cut off the nudity scenes,” it said.

In the scene, Winslet reclines nude as Leonardo DiCaprio sketches her portrait.

The nudity was cut when the film first came to China in 1998 but Chinese audiences were hoping for a change of heart for the 3D reissue. All they got was a close-up of Winslet’s face.

“I’ve been waiting almost 15 years, and not for the 3D icebergs,” one moviegoer quoted told China Daily.
