I am overjoyed: 'Kolaveri di' music director

I am overjoyed. I am shocked. I am delighted,” says Anirudha, whose song Why This Kolaveri Di, from the Tamil film 3, starring Dhanush, is apparently the only video people are supposed to be looking for online, with more than a lakh viewers.

The song of course has no strategy behind it. “Aishwarya Dhanush, who’s the director of the film, gave me a situation, which had to express heart break and sadness, and I came up with the tune. Then, Dhanush heard the tune and just started putting random phrases into the tune and it became a song and we loved it,” says Anirudha.

Incidentally, there is no lyrics sheet for the song, which took only 20 to 25 minutes to record.

“There are words like ‘holy cow’ in the song, which could have only happened when someone is not ‘planning’ a song,” says the music director.

All of 21 years of age, Anirudha is very adamant about focusing on this particular film before he takes on his second project. “After this song, I have massive pressure on me to make sure all the other songs in the album are as good. So I am working really hard on them right now; the album, which is being produced by Sony Music, is nearing completion and we should be releasing it around the end of December,” he says.

On his future plans, Anirudha says, “This is my first film. I have just turned 21. I don’t want to go and put my hands into too many things. Let 3 happen, let the album do well and then I’ll think about what to do work on next. For now, I am thanking my stars, my director, the record label and the people out there who are watching the video.”

Talking about the vocalist of the song; how does Dhanush really sound? “He’s got a very raw voice; one that you can relate to very easily but he’s not a professionally trained singer. But for a song like this, a voice like his worked in our favour,” he signs off.
