It’s a serious business… making movies, says Komal Nahta

It’s a Rs4,000 crore industry. Its stakeholders are courted by all and sundry— from banks to cricket leagues! It is the Indian film industry! As it grows at an astronomical rate, ETC has decided to unravel what keeps the merchants of dreams ticking. The Indian film industry’s longest running trade show, ETC Bollywood Business has donned a new look as a one-stop-show about Bollywood Inc.

The journey started four years ago and aired previews, reviews, BO collections, celebrity chats et al. Now with a new host in the person of Komal Nahta, Bollywood Business has changed its format. While Mondays will be about Box Office collections of the films released the previous Friday, Tuesdays and Wednesdays will air feature stories and debates with who’s-who of the Indian film industry. Thursdays will be for the previews of the movies to be released the next day, while on Friday Komal Nahta will review the films that have released earlier in the day. Taking a leaf out of the original, the new ETC Bollywood Business will continue with industry chats on all days.

“The entertainment industry is today pegged at Rs. 4000 crores and growing as we speak! Movies are business ventures and the business sense that goes behind making them are as intriguing as any other. Every movie requires investment, product development, sales, marketing, communication … and the fate of the venture is decided on one single weekend! No other business operates on such high risk ratio. It is our endeavor to educate the public about this.” says  Anurag Bedi, Business Head, ETC.

The film industry too, was thrilled about the latest development.
“Komal Nahta — The Larry King of Indian TV/Cinema— clear thinking, incisive and tell-it-like-it-is style.” commented Ronnie Screwvala, CEO and Founder/Chairman, UTV Group.

“Komal is so honest and so analytical in his film reviews that it’s a pleasure to read them. The best part is that he understands the creative side of filmmaking just as well as he does the commercial side,” says Rakesh Roshan.

Speaking about his association with ETC, Komal Nahta says,” It is an exciting proposition for me. I truly believe that the audience must be made aware of the business of entertainment. They must be educated to judge a film on its merits —creatively and commercially. It is an alignment of similar beliefs.”

With a slew of some eagerly awaited movies scheduled for the next two weeks, the show is keeping a hawk’s eye on the proceedings. Tune into Bollywood Business everyday at 8:30pm on channel ETC to know more about India’s most loved industry.
