‘Reinventing my genre is in my DNA: Manish Malhotra

Fashion designer Manish Malhotra has a lot up his sleeve. Apart from dolling up umpteen number of stars for their films, the designer is also caught up with the renovation of his studio, planning new collections and putting together a memorable show for his stint for the grand finale in the upcoming fashion week in Mumbai.

Buzz is that actor and one of his close buddies Kareena Kapoor will be a showstopper for him and if that happens, then her beau actor Saif Ali Khan might just be there too, cheering for her from the front row.

Manish reminds us that ironically, it was at his show that Saif and Kareena made public their relationship when they turned up hand-in-hand a few years back.

Talking about his collection for LFW, Manish says, “I believe in reinventing my own genre and not trying to put up stunts just to be different. I’d rather stick to what’s in my DNA. Designers should also realise the importance of sticking to their own DNA and genres instead of aping others.”

Though most designers like to flaunt the number of international buyers they attract at trade events, Manish says that he values the desi market the most. He adds that his goal has always been to take Indian designs to a global platform.

  “Look at the Chinese and the Japanese, they’ve gone global and at the same time retained their cultural essence,” he points out.
