79-year-old Sayeed, detected with sepsis, decreased blood count and pneumonia, was admitted to the hospital on December 24, with complaints of neck pain and fever.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed died on Thursday morning at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) where he was admitted for the past 15 days.
The Chief Minister breathed his last around 7.30 AM, Education Minister and spokesman for Government Nayeem Akhter said here.
Sayeed, 79, is survived by his wife, three daughters including PDP President Mehbooba Mufti, and a son.
The mortal remains of the Chief Minister has been flown to Srinagar where many prominent politicians are paying their last respect.
Earlier PM Modi, Sonia Gandhi and others paid their respect to the departed leader in New Delhi.
Mufti Mohammad Sayeed's daughter, Mehbooba Mufti is likely to take over the helm of Jammu and Kashmir. Junior ally in the state BJP has said that it is upto PDP to decide who is going to be the next CM of Jammu and Kashmir.

Jammu and Kashmir government announced a holiday today and a seven-day mourning period as a mark of respect to Mufti Mohammad Sayeed .
The flags atop buildings of constitutional authorities and state government will fly at half-mast during the mourning period, an official spokesman said.
Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has expressed grief over the demise of Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, saying he was a true statesman amongst the politicians of the current era.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi also expressed grief over the demise of Mufti as she communicated her condolences to his wife, daughter Mehbooba Mufti and other well-wishers.
"In his death, the state of Jammu and Kashmir as indeed the entire nation has lost a great leader," she said.
Recalling his long association with the Congress party, she said Mufti's contribution as a "humanist and to public life in various capacities will forever be remembered." (PTI)

Expressing his heartfelt condolence, President Pranab Mukherjee said, "Heartfelt condolences on the passing away of J & K CM Mufti Mohammad Sayeed."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the death of Mufti Sayeed, saying his demise leaves a huge void in the nation and that the leader who provided a healing touch would be missed.
"Mufti Sahab provided a healing touch to J&K through his leadership. He will be missed by all of us. Condolences to his family & supporters," he said in a tweet.
"What stood out about Mufti Sahab was his statesmanship. In his long political journey he won many admirers across the political spectrum," Modi said.
The Prime Minister said Mufti's demise leaves a "huge void in the nation and in J&K, where his exemplary leadership had a major impact on people's lives".

Taking to micro-blogging site, Omar Abdullah said, "Just heard the terrible terrible news of Mufti Sahib's passing away. I'm shocked & deeply saddened. May he rest in peace."
He further added, "My heart felt sympathies to Mrs Syed, Mehbooba & the entire family in this most difficult of times. My & my family's prayers are with them."

Stating that Mufti Sayeed ji had a wonderful understanding of complex issues pertaining to J&K, singh added, "He wanted to bring permanent peace to the valley."
