Kashmiri students held, charged with sedition for 'celebrating' Pulwama Attack, making anti-national comments

The Pulwama terror took the lives of 40 CRPF jawans on Thursday.

After 40 CRPF jawans lost their lives in a dastardly attack by terrorists in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday, India has been mourning the death of its Bravehearts.   

After the attacks, while on one hand there are reports of Kashmiris based out of Jammu and Kashmir being harassed in several parts of the countries, on the other hand, some Kashmiri students are allegedly making anti-national remarks on social media and celebrating the Pulwama terror attack.

Four female paramedical students of Kashmiri-origin have been slapped with sedition charges after being suspended from a private institute here for allegedly celebrating the Pulwama terror attack by posting "anti-national" messages on an instant messaging app, officials said Sunday. The Aligarh Muslim University has also suspended an undergraduate Kashmiri student for his alleged objectionable tweet in connection with the Pulwama attack. Silimar incidents have also taken place elsewhere in the country.

Here are a few instances where students and youngsters at large from Kashmir have allegedly made anti-national comments after the cruel attacks.

Four female paramedical students of Kashmiri-origin have been slapped with sedition charges after being suspended from a private institute here for allegedly celebrating the Pulwama terror attack by posting "anti-national" messages on an instant messaging app, officials said Sunday.

The second-year students of the National Institute of Medical Science (NIMS), Talveen Manzoor, Iqra, Zohra Nazir and Uzma Nazir, were suspended for posting on WhatsApp a picture in which they were purportedly seen celebrating the terrorist attack in Kashmir that claimed the lives of 40 CRPF personnel.

The picture soon went viral, prompting the university administration to take action.

In the suspension order, the NIMS registrar said,"You have posted an anti-national message on your WhatsApp for celebrating killing of Pulwama terrorist attack martyrs. The university will not tolerate and strictly condemns such activities. The act is grave and serious in nature." Later, a case was registered against the four students following a complaint by the university administration, a police official said.

The students were booked under IPC sections 124A (sedition), 153A (promoting enmity) and relevant provisions of the Information Technology (IT) Act. Senior officials are investigating the matter and appropriate action will be taken thereafter, SP (Rural) Harendra Kumar said.

A Kashmiri student of a private university in Himachal Pradesh's Solan district was 'rusticated' and later arrested for allegedly making anti-national remarks on social media, police said Sunday. Tahseen Gul of Jammu and Kashmir's Srinagar was arrested on Saturday as he had made some 'anti-national' remarks Instagram, Baddi Superintendent of Police Rohit Malpani said.

The student allegedly glorified suicide attacker Adil Ahmad Dar, who was behind the Pulwama terror attack in which 40 CRPF personnel were killed.

A case has been registered on the basis of a complaint by the university administration, a police official said.

In the complaint, Dean Administration, Chitkara University, Col AK Chauhan (retired) alleged that Gul posted some anti-national remarks on social media "creating a tense situation" in the campus, the police official added

A Kashmiri student studying at a college in Bengaluru was on Saturday arrested for allegedly hailing the Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorist who carried out the suicide attack at Pulwama. 23-year-old Tahir Latif from Baramulla district is a student of Rewa University. 

He had allegedly put up a screen-shot of the JeM terrorist Adil Ahmed and the bodies of the slain soldiers as his display picture on WhatsApp, police said.

He had also allegedly put up a status message saying, "A big salute to this brave man!!! May Allah accept your Shahadat and give you the highest place in Jannah #Shaheed Adil Bhai." 

Earlier, following a complaint by Vishwa Hindu Parishad office bearer Girish Bharadwaj, a case was registered against Kashmiri youth Abid Malik as well for allegedly posting derogatory remarks on a social networking site.

The case was registered against him for a post he wrote on Facebook. The youth allegedly shared some images posted by a news channel after the attack and captioned it 'The real surgical attack'

At the Parliament police station in Delhi, a Kashmiri youngster was beaten for allegedly raising slogans and putting up posters which said 'Pakistan Zindabad' at Jantar Mantar. Initial investigation suggests that the youngster, 28, was intoxicated and was taken for medical tests.
