Five persons, including a woman and a child, were burnt alive and three others sustained serious burn injuries when two hotels in Charbagh area in Lucknow caught major fire early Tuesday morning. UP CM Yogi Adityanath has announced Rsa 2 lakh compensation for family of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured.

The fire started around 6 am from the basement of the SSJ International Hotel, located near Charbagh Railway station, spread to other floors and engulfed the adjoining Viraat International Hotel also. The basement was converted into a bar in the hotel.

About 50 guests were staying in the two hotels. About half a dozen fire tenders were pressed to douse rising flames. The fire personnel rescued guests who were trapped inside their room in the two hotels. The fire was controlled by 8.30 am but by that time the two hotels were almost gutted in the fire.

“We rescued as many as 40 persons from the two hotels. Eight seriously burnt persons were rushed to Trauma Centre for treatment,” said a fire officer. Apparently, short circuit is stated to be reason behind the fire. Since the basement of the hotel was having a bar, the fire spread fast to other floors and engulfed the adjoining hotel also.

Doctors at the Trauma Centre said that eight persons were brought with serious burn injuries. Five them, including one woman and child, were declared dead on arrival while two seriously one was shifted with 80 per cent burn injuries to burn unit of another hospital.

Doctors did not deny due to asphyxia after the victims inhaled poisonous smoke.

The State Tourism Minister Rita Bahuguna Joshi rushed to the spot to monitor the rescue operation. “A probe has been ordered to look into if both the hotels had complied with the fire safety norms,” said she.

The SSP Deepak Kumar said that a case has been registered against the owners and management of the two hotels. "Prima facie, it looked like fire safety system of the two hotels were not working," said he.

About a dozen persons have so far been admitted at the Trauma Centre with burn injuries and serious breathing problem.  The child who died has been identified as Noori. Efforts are to identity others who died. The hotel staff and managers are absconding after the fire.

Taking serious note of fire in two hotels resulting in deaths of five persons, the Yogi Adityanath government has ordered a magisterial inquiry. The probe will also look into fire safety measures in other hotels of the state capital.  A case against Section 304 of the PIC has been registered against the owners and managers of the two hotels.
