Beaumonde Towers in Mumbai's Worli catches fire; Sena corporator blames security guards as fire rages

A level-III fire has broken out in a residential complex at Appasaheb Marathe Marg in Worli, Mumbai. The fire, which originally was a level II fire, has spread, the fire department has said. Fortunately, everyone has been rescued.

The building known as Beaumonde Towers (pronounced Bo Monde) is a ground-plus-33 floor structure. The complex has three towers, and Tower B was the one that caught fire. However, as a precaution, residents of Tower A and C were evacuated as well.

"Apparently no one was living on the top floor. They live abroad most of the time," according to Surendra Malwankar, who lives on the fifth floor of the building. 

The fire broke out on the 33rd floor and has now spread to five floors below, it was reported.

Originally, four fire tenders were immediately rushed to the spot after a call was made at 2.10 pm.

The Mumbai police in response to a Twitter user sharing a picture of the fire, tweeted, "Our staff & Fire Brigade is on the spot for assistance. They are trying their best to douse the fire and provide necessary help to people there."

There is already an early controversy brewing about the fire with Shiv Sena corporator Kishori Pednekar alleging that the building’s security guards tried to douse the fire before informing the ‘fire and police promptly.

Chief Fire Officer, P S Rahabgdale said, "A duplex flat on 32nd and 33rd floor has caught fire. We have rescued 90-95 persons. The firefighting operations are going on"

Only last month a flat in BeauMonde was leased out at a monthly rent of Rs 11.51 lakh. It was leased to a financial advisory firm. There's a fire in the building today the fire is contained to the top floor of the building.

In 2010, actor Deepika Padukone bought a plush four-bedroom apartment in a 33-storey tower for a whopping Rs16 crore along with her father Prakash, a former national badminton champion. Currently, Padukone is travelling, but all her staff members were successfully evacuated.
