However, sources at Nabanna, the state secretariat, batted for the state police saying that SPG took over the ground seven days prior to the event and so the state police was not responsible in any way.

Even as the state police on Tuesday filed a case against the organisers and the decorator that put up the structure of the West Midnapore rally in West Bengal where a tent collapse during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's address on Monday left 90 injured, the BJP leaders said they would file a counter case.

"We will move court against the state administration, district magistrate and district police superintendent. Just like it happened in Shantiniketan during the PM's visit, there was a security lapse here. Was it intentional? Was there a greater conspiracy behind it? Where was the SP when the Prime Minister was there? Why did he arrive 30 minutes after the incident? We are not experts. What were the state PWD officials and police doing? Why didn't they raise any objection when the tent was put up? These questions need to be answered," said state BJP secretary Sayantan Basu at a press conference on Tuesday.

However, sources at Nabanna, the state secretariat, batted for the state police saying that SPG took over the ground seven days prior to the event and so the state police was not responsible in any way. "SPG never communicated with the state police or kept them in the loop about the preparations. Police were not even allowed inside. On the contrary, after the structure collapsed, officials of state police helped in the rescue," said a senior Nabanna official.

Rajiv Singh, owner of JN Decorators, the company who had put up the tent said, "How can we be held responsible? It had rained so much for the last three days and people were climbing up the scaffolding. The police did not even stop them. They should have prevented people from climbing the tent."

TMC leaders also hit back at BJP, with state food and supplies minister Jyotipriyo Mullick saying, "It must be found out if there was any syndicate involved in putting up the stage and the tents. Maybe there was a compromise on quality to pay commission money to syndicate members of the party which undertook building the stage," he said.
