BRD TRAGEDY: Dr Kafeel Khan gets bail from Allahabad High Court after eight months

Dr Kafeel Khan, an accused in the death of over 33 children at the BRD Medical College due to oxygen short supply n August 10/11 last year, got bail from the Allahabad High Court on Wednesday after languishing in jail for over eight months.

Justice Yashwant Verma of the single bench in Allahabad High Court granted approved his counsel's application and granted bail to Dr Khan. The state standing counels had opposed his bail application.

Earlier, Manish Bhandari, the owner of the Pushpa Sales Private Limited was granted bail by the Supeme Court after it was earlier rejected by the High Court. Other seven accused, including then Principal Rajeev Mishra, remained in jail.

Three days ago, Dr Khan's wife Shabishta had circulated a letter written by the child specialist from jail to media in Delhi. He had written sequence of events on that fateful day when oxygen supply was snapped by the supplier over non-payment and to plead his innocence.

Significantly, in the letter he pointed that he became victim of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's anger due to the media lauding his role in saving infants by arranging oxygen cylinders.

"My life turned upside down when CM Yogiji Maharaj arrived on August 13 2017. He asked me: "so you are Dr Kafeel? You arranged cylinders?" I was like – "yes Sir". He got angry – "So you think by arranging cylinders, you became hero, I will see it," he had stated in the letter circulated to the media.

"My family suffered a lot during all these eight months. My husband is innocent. He paid the price for being a good human and a doctor who saved lives of many children. I thank judiciary, media, friends and relatives who stood by us during the time of crisis,"

"We had full faith in the judiciary, that it will do justice to my brother who was made a scapegoat in the unfortunate deaths of infants at BRD Medical College in August last year,"
