Earth Hour to kick in ‘Give Up’ campaign

World Wildlife Fund’s (WWF) global Earth Hour movement, where citizens and government agencies symbolically switch off lights for an hour to raise consciousness for environment protection, will be celebrated with a ‘Give Up’ theme this year on Saturday. 

It will mark the beginning of a three-year long campaign to engage millions in making sustainable life choices and stop wasteful consumption to conserve natural resources. 

WWF India’s website claimed that already, thousands have pledged to stop using plastic and instead save water, fuel and electricity. 

The day will also be marked by a host of events such as signature campaigns, candle light vigils and walkathons. Last year’s Earth Hour saw iconic monuments in India such as Rashtrapati Bhawan, India Gate, Lotus Temple, Char Minar go dark to mark the event. 

A WWF release said that approximately 50 per cent of the Indian population depends directly on natural resources even as 70 per cent of our surface water is polluted and 60 per cent of groundwater sources are expected to be critical by the next decade.
