The Kerala government has so far rehabilitated 454 families from the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary in the state to reduce human-animal conflict, Environment Minister Harsh Vardhan told the Rajya Sabha today.

Replying to a question by member C P Narayanan on whether rehabilitation would be considered to avoid conflict between humans and animals, Vardhan said the move was under implementation and was helping mitigate conflict.

"Such activities have been implemented in Wayanad forests in Kerala and the state has so far rehabilitated 454 families," he said.

The state government has informed the Centre that after the rehabilitation, the area has been teeming with wildlife, he said.

Vardhan also said the ministry has received a proposal regarding rehabilitation of people living in deep forests, to keep the forests as a contiguous unit.
