UAE offers Rs 700 crore financial assistance for flood-hit Kerala

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Tuesday said that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has offered financial assistance of Rs 700 crore.

Various people and organisations across the world have come forward to help the rain-battered state in its hour of need.  Thousands of personnel of Indian Navy, Air Force, Army, NDRF and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) are engaged in the rescue and relief operations.

Vijayan's also said that Kerala Cabinet has decided to recommend to the Governor to convene a special assembly session on August 30th to discuss relief, rehabilitation, and reconstruction.

"Your contribution to disaster relief fund no matter how big or small it is, will be issued to deserving people. Request each one of you to contribute to CMDRF to support our mission to rebuild lives in the impacted areas," Vijayan said on Twitter.

More relief materials from different parts of India have started arriving at the Cochin port through coastal shipping. Naval Ship INS Deepak carrying relief materials from Mumbai had arrived at the Cochin port on Sunday with about 800 tonnes of fresh water and about 18 tonnes of provisions.

On Monday, Vijayan had announced that the severe inundation claimed at least 223 lives between August 8-20 and urged the Central government to for additional aid.

"As per preliminary estimates, the state has so far suffered a loss of nearly rs 20,000 crore.The Union government has so far rendered all help to the state. Kerala received Rs 210 crore towards the Chief Minister's Distress Relief Fund and a promise of Rs 160 crore," he said.

The Centre has declared the devastating floods in Kerala a 'calamity of severe nature' as the state braced for the gigantic task of reconstruction of destroyed infrastructure and rehabilitation.

On Saturday, Narendra Modi announced immediate financial assistance of Rs 500 crore for rain-battered Kerala, after reviewing the flood situation in the state. 

Modi also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh per person to the next of kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to those seriously injured from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund, a Prime Minister's Office statement said.

With flood water level receding in many places, people have started returning to their homes and begun cleaning operations.
