Counting of votes is nearly finished in three Lok Sabha and 33 assembly constituencies spread across 10 states for bypolls, which were held on September 13. The three Lok Sabha seats are in Vadodara (Gujarat), vacated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Mainpuri (Uttar Pradesh) and Medak (Telangana) while 11 assembly constituencies are in UP, nine in Gujarat, four in Rajasthan, two in West Bengal, five in Northeastern states and one each in Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh.
The broad trend which has emerged is definitely going to take the sheen away from Narendra Modi's government which was riding high on its thumping victory in general elections held in May,2014. The party has suffered severe setback in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, where they reaped rich harvest in last election. The saffron party is winning only 2 out of the 11 assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh. Western Uttar Pradesh, which was in news currently for being a cauldron of communal tension has given a thumbs down to BJP. It comes as a severe jolt to Yogi Adityanath who was in charge of BJP's election in Uttar Pradesh. SP has made a great comeback in Uttar Pradesh and are set to win 9 seats. This will come as a welcome break for Akhilesh Yadav who faced flak for party's insipid performance in Lok Sabha elections.
In Rajasthan, Congress is on a comeback trail and has won 3 out of the 4 seats. This will be interpreted as a wakeup call for Rajasthan CM Vasundhara Raje who is currently ruling the state with iron hand. Even in Gujarat, BJP has conceded some space to Congress. It is bad news for new CM Anandiben Patel, and likely to be a headache for BJP President Amit Shah. BJP's only silver lining in the dark cloud has come from an unlikely state. The party has opened its account in West Bengal Assembly winning one out of the two seat up for grabs.
The bypoll results, seen as yet another test of Narendra Modi government's popularity since it assumed power in May, are also important as BJP is preparing for polls in Haryana and Maharashtra next monthwhere it hopes to oust the Congress. BJP's setback in this election may give Shiv Sena the upper hand in the long drawn tussle for seat arrangement both parties are having.
Yogi Adityanath says BJP lost as he was not allowed to campaign
After BJP suffered a major blow in the politically-crucial state of Uttar Pradesh, its MP Yogi Adityanath today blamed the Samajwadi Party government for not allowing him to campaign for the bypolls in 11 Assembly seats.
"The way police and administration have been politicised ...I was not allowed to address election meetings and obstacles were created," he told reporters in Gorakhpur. "We have won both Noida and Lucknow where I campaigned," he said, adding his focus was on "development and Hindutva issues" during electioneering. Read more
Congress on Tuesday termed the results of Assembly bypolls, in which BJP suffered major reverses, as "good omen" for the securlar forces and said it should ring alarm bells in the saffron party as people have rejected the "politics of polarisation".
Saying that "Modi (government's) honeymoon period with the people was over", party spokesperson Shakeel Ahmed sought to portray the verdict in Uttar Pradesh, where BJP could win only three of 11 assembly seats while rest going to SP, as "the vote against BJP more than in favour of any party". Uttar Pradesh by-polls: Setback for BJP, shot in the arm for Samajwadi Party

Congress, Aam Aadmi Party declare 'Modi wave' to be over
The Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Tuesday declared the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led wave for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to be over, pointing to a disappointing display for the BJP in the bypoll results announced on Tuesday.
Congress general secretary Shakeel Ahmad, speaking to ANI said, "The Congress has done really well in Gujarat and Rajasthan. In the Lok Sabha elections, we hadn't won a single seat in either state. It is significant that on the day that Prime Minister Modi is visiting Gujarat for the first time since taking office, we have wrested a few seats from the BJP. The other significant result is in UP, where the BJP has lost very badly. People have rejected the party that instigated riots." Read more
Senior Congress leader and Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Gujarat Assembly Shankersinh Vaghela welcomed the bypoll result from Gujarat today and termed it as an "eye-opener" for the BJP. Last month, the saffron party had received a jolt in assembly by-elections suffering a 4-6 defeat at the hands of the RJD-JD(U)-Congress alliance in Bihar and yielding two strongholds to Congress in Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh.
Around 53 per cent votes were polled in the seats in UP, including Mainpuri vacated by Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav. SP has fielded Tej Pratap Singh Yadav, the grandson of Mulayam's elder brother and the challenge for it is not just to win the seat again but also to maintain the big margin.
The 11 assembly seats in UP, whose outcome may be a pointer to which way the political wind is blowing in the run up to 2017 assembly polls, are Saharanpur Nagar, Noida, Thakurdwara, Bijnor, Nighasan, Balha, Sirathu, Rohaniya, Hamirpur, Charkhari and Lucknow East.
In Rajasthan, it is a close contest between main opposition Congress and the ruling BJP, which would try to retain all four seats and maintain a tally of 163 in the House of 200. The four assembly seats in Rajasthan saw a voting figure of 66 per cent.
Trinamool Congress is hoping to retain two assembly seats of Basirhat Dakshin and Chowringhee in West Bengal in the face of Saradha chit fund scam that has already ensnared some of its leaders.
