Barring a few incidents of minor clashes, the poll process of 17th Lok Sabha elections had been peaceful in two of the 42 Lok Sabha constituencies – Cooch Behar and Alipurduars. While Cooch Behar recorded 80.11%, compared to 82.81% in 2014, Alipurduars marked 81.58% turnout, compared to 83.18 in 2014.

The most important pattern noticed this time was of the increased strength of BJP since the last general elections, assurance of Central forces on the ground and national leaders boosting the morale of cadre at several public meetings. While both, ruling Trinamool and rival NDA, are exuding the confidence of winning both seats, observers opine that the mood on the polling day is indicative of a 'decisive' battle.

Polling process was carried out in 2,010 and 1,783 polling stations at Cooch Behar and Alipurduars, respectively. While 47 companies of Central force had been deployed in Cooch Behar, 21 were deployed in Alipurduars.
Clashes between BJP and TMC workers were reported from a few places where members of both parties complained of assault.

The turnout at most booths had been impressive at all booths since morning. Malfunctioning of EVMs had been reported from some booths at Alipurduars where the poll process had been delayed. North Bengal development minister Rabindranath Ghosh alleged of conspiracy in EVMs. "How come so many EVMs malfunctioned at the same time and the new ones which are being brought cant be tested properly. I smell something fishy. I tried to call the observers but no one is taking the calls," he said.

Sanjay Basu, additional chief electoral officer of West Bengal said that Congress had complained of trouble at 10 booths and BJP had complained of 700 booths. Those were being looked into and the CEO WB is also trying to identify those involved in the stray incidents of EVM tampering. Strict action would be taken against offenders.
