Mumbai rains: Danger alert as cracks develop on Thane's Saket bridge connecting island city to Bhiwandi

It appears that the bridge trouble in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) isn't going away any time soon. A week after a portion of the Andheri bridge collapsed due to heavy rains, the Saket bridge in Thane, which connects the satellite city to Bhiwandi, has developed cracks, it has been reported.

Local television channels have highlighted the cracks, and have warned of vehicles driving over it in case it gives way.

Last Tuesday, one person was killed and four others were injured after a part of a foot overbridge (FOB) collapsed in Mumbai's Andheri, bringing train services of the Western Railway to a halt.

The Gokhale Bridge of Andheri collapsed at around 7:45, affecting thousands of office-goers during the rush hour.

Overhead Equipment (OHE) have been damaged and a team of engineers has swung into action to restore it, chief PRO of Western Railway Ravinder Bhakar said.

The injured were rushed to Cooper hospital out of which two are admitted in ICU and, four has a fracture.

In October 2009, the motorman and a passenger of a CST-Kalyan local were killed and 11 persons injured when a girder from a  bridge under construction fell on a water pipeline, which, in turn, collapsed on the moving train near Thane station at 10.40am on Friday.

With debris on the tracks, the Central line was blocked, disrupting suburban and long-distance traffic for the entire day — 27 long-distance trains were cancelled and more than 20 were rescheduled.

Local services from Ghatkopar to CST and Thane to Kalyan, however, resumed within an hour of the accident. The bridge was eventually fixed and is now fully functional
