Narendra Modi on Earth Day: Let's work together to mitigate menace of climate change

Celebrated every year on April 22, the global day of environmental action to make this planet better place for living, definitely appears to have made its impact at least in terms of awareness and public involvement. On Earth Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has complimented all those individuals and organisations who are working towards promoting harmony with nature and ensuring sustainable development. 

Sustainable development holds the key to preserve and conserve natural resources for the future generations while also meeting the needs for development and growth. 

Highlighting the urgent need to fight climate change, Narendra Modi tweeted: On #EarthDay, let us reaffirm our commitment towards creating a better planet for our future generations. Let us work together to mitigate the menace of climate change. This would be a great tribute to our beloved Mother Earth.

World Health Organization (WHO) has also highlighted the impact of climate change on health. According to a tweet by WHO, "Climate change is expected to cause 250,000 additional deaths per year between 2030-2050." 

This day was first celebrated on April 22, 1970, and has ever since been an annual event. US Senator Gaylord Nelson is credited with organising the event 48 years ago. Million of American came out in support of the cause raised by Nelson, demonstrations were carried out in different cities in the United States. Soon, the issue of clean environment and earth conservation became national agenda in the United States. 

After years of advocacy by environmentalists around the world, 20 years later Earth Day went global.
