The Enforcement Directorate has registered a money laundering case in connection with the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput, officials said on Friday.

This comes amid rising demand for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the actor's death. ED is the first central agency to launch a probe into the death of Sushant who allegedly committed suicide in June.

Sources said summons is likely to be sent to Sushant's alleged girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty next month.

Mumbai Police and Bihar Police are already investigating the matter. Bihar Police launched its probe after Sushant's family lodged a complaint against Chakraborty and some others in Patna.

Sources said the ED has taken cognisance of the Bihar Police FIR to register an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

The ED complaint has been filed in the case related to alleged financial irregularities being suspected to have been done against Sushant.

The central probe agency had recently sought the FIR copy from the Bihar Police. The FIR filed by Rajput's father Krishna Kumar Singh names Chakraborty, her family members and six others and accuses them of abetment to suicide.

The ED will probe allegations of alleged mishandling of Rajput's money and his bank accounts, and whether Rajput's income was used for money laundering and creating illegal assets, reports quoting officials said.

The ED case comes after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders in Maharashtra expressed the need for an investigation in the matter by central agencies instead of the Mumbai police.

Former state Chief Minister and leader of opposition Devendra Fadnavis had earlier on Friday sought a central probe.

"There is a huge public sentiment about handing over Sushant Singh Rajput case to CBI but looking at the reluctance of State Government, at least ED can register an ECIR since misappropriation and money laundering angle has come out," he said in a tweet.
