Terrorists masquerading as stone pelters lobbed a powerful grenade and opened indiscriminate fire on the security forces leaving nine troopers and policemen injured in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district on Friday.

The incident occurred in Tral when gunmen mingled with mob and fired upon the security forces when they were handling law and order on Tral road.

“Terrorists lobbed a grenade followed by firing on the security forces from a crowd when they were busy with law and order duties on Tral road resulting in the injuries to the nine security forces personnel,” a police spokesman said.

Police said security force personnel exercised maximum restraint after being attacked by terrorists to prevent any civilian casualties. The injured security force personnel were evacuated to the hospital for medical treatment.

Meanwhile, a head constable of Jammu and Kashmir police, who was greviously injured in the terror attack at Kak Sarai Karan Nagar on June 15, succumbed in the hospital on Friday.

Head Constable Habib-ul-lah was among five injured in the standoff attack on June 15. Police said martyr Habib-ul-lah the lone bread winner for his family. He is survived by three daughters Riffat Ara 21, Insha, a class X student and Rubeena a Class VI student besides two sons Ghulam Mohi-ud-Din 22 and Kaiser Ahmad Lone 26. Police said the marriage of Riffat was scheduled to be solemnized next week.

Anantnag encounter kills Islamic State Jammu and Kashmir chief

In a major victory for the security forces, the chief of the banned Islamic State Jammu and Kashmir (ISJK) Dawood Ahmed Sofi was gunned down in an encounter in Anantnag on Friday. 

A policeman and a civilian were also killed in the encounter. The operation began before dawn at Khiram, 23 km from the main national highway and overlooking the tourist town of Pahalgam, after intelligence reports about the presence of militants in the area, police said. 

One of the militants killed was identified as Dawood Ahmed Sofi, who headed the ISIS affiliate ISJK and is believed to be involved in several cases of murder and stone pelting , he said.

The other three, also believed to be with the ISJK, were identified as Aadil Rehman Bhat, Mohammad Ashraf Itoo and Majid Manzoor Dar, said Inspector General of Police (Kashmir) Swayam Prakash Pani, who was supervising the operations.
