Micro-blogging site Twitter issued a written apology to the Parliamentary Committee over the erroneous depiction of Ladakh on the map. It marked the Union Territory in China. Twitter has said that the errors will be rectified by November 30.

"Twitter's deposition has come in form of an affidavit signed by Damien Karien, Chief Privacy Officer of Twitter Inc, for wrong geo-tagging of India's map," Meenakshi Lekhi told news agency PTI.

Lekhi added, "Twitter has now given us a written apology on an affidavit for Ladakh being shown in China."

"They have apologised for hurting Indian sentiments and have sworn to correct the error by November 30, 2020," she stated.

The Indian government expressed its dismay over social media giant Twitter's act of misrepresentation of the Indian map and in a strongly worded letter asserted that any attempts to disrespect the country's sovereignty and integrity would not be accepted.

Earlier on November 9, the Union Ministry of Electronics and IT had issued a notice to Twitter for showing Leh as part of Jammu and Kashmir instead of the Union Territory of Ladakh.

The ministry in its notice sent to the global Vice President of Twitter has mentioned that showing Leh as part of Jammu and Kashmir is a deliberate attempt to undermine the will of the sovereign Parliament of India which had declared Ladakh as a Union Territory of India with its headquarter in Leh.

The Central government had bifurcated the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh on August 5, 2019.
