Watch: Indian Army rescues 45-day-old baby, mother from Kerala floods

In probably one of the rare good news coming from devastating floods of Kerala, a 45-day-old baby was rescued by a team of Indian Army recently.

According to the army officials, the baby-mother duo was rescued by the soldiers of 19th battalion of Madras Regiment. 

They were shifted from their submerged house to a relief camp in Mangaly, Ernakulam, the officials told DNA.

In a 32-second-long clip provided by the army, a soldier can be seen holding the baby draped in pink blanket, while the mother is seen getting down from the military truck later. 

The torrential rains have wreaked havoc in the ‘God’s Own Country’. Nearly 70 people have died in the worst flood in the history of Kerala. 

The defence forces have launched Operation Madad in the state to rescue people stranded in flood-hit houses. 
The army is using ‘BAUT’ or Boat Assault Universal Type in Kerala extensively. BAUTs are operational with the supervision of the Coast Guard team, an army official told DNA. ‘Ropes are also utilised to mark the safe route and aid civilians walking through the water towards the operating base,’ the officer added. 

Talking about the rescue operation, he said that a military truck along with nursing assistant are employed as ambulance for movement of civilians from rescue location to nearest camp/hospital.

On Wednesday, the Indian Navy said that it had deployed 21 rescue and diving teams with inflatable 'Gemini' boats as the flood situation further worsened across Kerala.

"A total of four teams went out today to augment those already deployed. More than 81 people were rescued, many of whom were also provided food and shelter by setting up a rescue camp," the Southern Naval Command said in a release.

Overall, five naval teams with an equal number of Gemini boats have been deployed at different places in Wayanad district, it said.
